Opening of the exhibition “Music of Freedom: Ukrainian Grassroots Initiatives from the 1980s to the 2020s” (PHOTO, VIDEO)

On December 27, the Lviv Municipal Art Center opened an exhibition Music of Freedom: Ukrainian Grassroots Initiatives from the 1980s to the 2020s .

The exhibition arose as a result of a thorough study of independent Ukrainian musical initiatives. Within the framework of the exhibition, the authors propose to consider the history of independent music through the prism of communities, grassroots initiatives and to investigate how music influenced civil society, reflected and accompanied social changes and moods.

Thank you for everyone who participated in the opening of the exhibition and became a part of this event. And, of course, thanks to the organization there:
The curators are Nazar Sheshuryak (Amnesia) and Olena Pogonchenkova (Bubblegum zine). Design and architecture of the exposition – Lera Guevska and Oleksandr Burlaka. The author of the project idea is Lyana Mytsko. The project manager is Marta Sloboda.

During the entire exhibition, donations will be collected for the organization Musicians Defend Ukraine — a charity fund supporting the figures of the Ukrainian music industry, who are currently at the frontline. This part of the exhibition is represented by a striking exhibit — the guitar of Andriy Zholob, the guitarist of the Beton group. She is silent because she is waiting for him from the war, where he serves as a combat medic.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by a large number of people, including the activist of the Kyiv music community Oleksiy Kovzhun, the legend of the Lviv underground of the 90s Ihor Tsymbrovsky, the Kovel musician and researcher of the Ukrainian underground of the 90s Vlad Yakovlev, musicians Oleksandr Zhabokrytskyi (Gravitsapa), Ship Her Son, Palindrom, music collector Maksym Zhuravchyk and many other creators and sympathizers of the Ukrainian independent scene.

You can also (and should!) visit the exhibition until the end of February 2024. Visitors will be able to “interact” with some exhibits of the exhibition, discover new bright names of Ukrainian music, as well as participate in a number of educational events within the program (lectures and curated tours). We advise you to subscribe to the pages of the Municipal Art Center so as not to miss these and other events.

The project “Music of Freedom: Ukrainian Grassroots Initiatives from the 1980s to the 2020s” was implemented with the support of the Goethe-Institut Ukraine Stabilization Fund for Education and Culture.
