MY APARTMENT SHED ITS SKIN: an exhibition of historical wall paintings of Lviv

06/03/23―15/03/23

We invite you to an exhibition of Lviv wall paintings transfers from the 16th – 19th centuries. Most of them decorated the walls and ceilings of the Eminovich family tenement on Virmenska Street. Today they filled the exhibition halls of Lviv Municipal Art Center at 11 Stefanyka street as separate historical objects.

Monumental art works can be found on the walls and ceilings of many apartments in the center of Lviv. During the soviet period and the post-soviet fashion for so-called “euro repair”, these paintings were buried under layers of enamels, paints and clapboards. Today, we are witnessing how these tenements “shed their skin” thanks to the work of restorers and art critics. This exhibition and educational program are about these people and their work.

The authors who discovered and preserved the transfers of these wall paintings are the team of KARP Restorer (head — Vasyl Karpiv). During the exhibition, you will also get to know doctor of architecture Oleg Rybchinsky and artist Vlodek Kostyrk. In addition we present the results of restoration by the “Garda” workshop led by Iryna Girna on the walls and ceilings of the Center. The designers from “Replus Bureau” will describe the cooperation with restorers in the historical buildings of the city. Our partners from “Bureau Spadshchyna” will tell about working with heritage and communicating with residents in Lviv and “Prohulyanky Lvovom” initiative will describe their experience in popularizing architecture and wall paintings.
