The exhibition takes place as part of the “Lviv Sculpture Week ’24”
“One could watch the life of these monuments for hours, catching oneself thinking that there is no time to look for something more alive than this cemetery” – Andriy Kis
The exhibition about memory and its preservation, about the study of cultural roots was conceived last year and was supposed to be one of the important events of recalling the naive cemetery sculpture in the territories of western Ukraine during the Lviv Sculpture Week 2024, united by the “Trace of Memory” theme.
Andriy Kis provided his photo archive and made a travel route through the cemeteries of the region, where naive craftsmen worked. But it so happened that we open the exhibition and go on a trip without him.
The theme of naive sculpture influenced Kis’ worldview and aesthetic, and was elaborated in the book “Tear and Stone”, in honor of which the exhibition is named. When a person leaves, there is always something left unspoken, unembodied. Andriy gives us a chance to continue without him: to speak and embody.
